Despite popular assumption that simply because we are presently a “mask company” that we must love masks, love wearing masks, love talking about masks, praying this pandemic never ends because we’re so rich from all the masks we’re selling we just can’t fathom a day when masks are no more. I hate to disappoint you but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Admittedly, the fashion designer in me does love the avante-garde nature of mask wearing but this really isn’t my preferred reason for it. Think more Eyes Wide Shut meets Lady Gaga meets Halloween meets Maison Margiela's 1995 Fall Runway show. I’ve spent the majority of my career building immaculate wedding gowns, beautiful day and evening dresses, lounge wear, swimwear, and almost everything in between. I now long for the days when my biggest issue was determining how many covered buttons I could afford to place along the center back of a cathedral length train, and how far apart I’d have to place them to keep it from looking too ostentatious. If you’re wondering if that’s a fake scenario I just made up, I assure you it is not.
So, trust me when I say that masks are literally the last product category, I EVER thought I’d launch my company with. I would much prefer to have launched the swimwear collection I had planned for 2020. Unfortunately plans changed. Life changed. The world changed. Masks became necessary. In the early days of the pandemic I became enraged seeing doctors and nurses go without the medical grade masks they deserved and so desperately needed in COVID stricken ICUs. Meanwhile civilians were walking around wearing those exact medical grade masks to the fking grocery store.
I grew tired of seeing disposable masks littered all over our sidewalks, streets and beaches. Not only do people need masks, I thought, but they need REUSABLE masks and the environment does too. I’m simply here helping to fulfill that need. I’m making myself useful, so to speak.
And useful we have been. As millions of people across America and billions around the world now need masks. Sadly, many people cannot afford them. I pivoted and decided to make masks because people NEED them. There are homeless, low income and underserved communities of people all over this country that NEED them. If we provide protection to those most at risk, the most vulnerable among us, we not only prevent spread but we also protect our frontline workers. This is why we are dedicated to donating half of our inventory to those most in need across the country.
I spend my days wishing for mask free times. I spend my nights dreaming of traveling freely, internationally, again as I always have – often 4-6 times per year or more. As someone who’s more comfortable on the move, more comfortable on a plane than standing still in my own city, I assure you – I long for pandemic free life. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon.
The need to embrace mask wearing has only grown in recent weeks. So, if we must wear masks – we might as well wear premium quality, stylish, eco-friendly masks amiright? I am proud of the masks we’ve created. Customer after customer reaches out regularly to tell me that our masks are the best they’ve ever worn. So much so, that they now can no longer wear any other masks. Our re-order rate is 133%. That’s almost unheard of. I hope if you are reading this and you haven’t given us a chance yet – please do. I promise you, you will not be disappointed.
Stay safe, stay stylish, stay humble.
